A mate of mine has been competing in this over the weekend:
http://www.lakeland100.com/It's a 104-mile trail running ultramarathon, that goes through the night (two, in fact, unless you're one of the super-elite who finish really fast...) Just to add to the fun, it's in the hills and valleys of the Lake District, some of the most rugged countryside in England.
He started at 5.30pm on friday night, and finished this morning just before twenty past eight, with a time of 38h49m36s. I'm telling you this purely because I'm so impressed with this feat. The drop-out rate of competitors is incredible - 60-70% some years. He came in 103rd, and with only ten minutes left until the cut off is due, 112 competitors out of 224 have made it, and it looks like the other 50% have retired!
As someone who has mentioned my own complete inablity to run before, I'm in complete awe of this.
He also completed the London Marathon (as a warm up event for this!) earlier in the year in 3h5m, so he's doing pretty well for himself!
