Ice Cream Headache
There are two theories as to what causes the rush of pain that comes with frozen food.

  • One, the rapid cooling of air in the frontal sinuses may trigger local pain receptors.
  • Two, the construction of blood vessels in the roof and rear of the mouth relax after the cold rush passes and as blood rushes into the area, it overloads local pain receptors, and shoots the pain to the head.

These are correlated with migraine headaches in some, which makes sense since the cause of these headaches is also dilation of arteries.

To reduce the pain: Keep your tongue touching the roof of your mouth - and stop eating so much ice cream!

I have heard that you can reduce the "brain freeze" from the frozen food by placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth to heat it back up. So I've tried it before and I think it does work. The headache seems to go away after the roof of my mouth isn't frozen anymore.

I've never heard to stop eating so much ice cream as a method to stop the brain freeze though! ;)

When are you suppose to do the "tongue on the roof of your mouth" thing, before you eat the ice cream, or after?
It's hard to do it before because I just want to eat the ice cream. And it's too late to do it after because I already have the brain freeze thing going. Sounds like a lot of work... haha.

You are supposed to put your tongue on the roof of your mouth after you have taken a bite of ice cream and you are starting to experience the headache....

The easy way would be to eat no ice cream at all (at least lowering the quantity). Ice cream has got nothing more than taste. So, I prefer not to eat much of it at all.
