I know for a fact that he is doing much better! I'll let Y's Guy reply back to you for his recommendation, but I'm pretty sure he'll recommend it!

Are you thinking of getting your deviated septum fixed? Did you break your nose in the past?

I can breathe a lot better through my nose. It has helped with my snoring allowing me to sleep better. As far as my workouts are go, I think the body is an amazing adaptable machine. I was getting all of the oxygen through my mouth that I needed. Now I use my nose more, but still breathe through my mouth when I amp it up. The major difference that I notice is in pacing on longer runs. I can slow my breathing through my nose and exhale through my mouth really creating a nice rhythm. The most important thing it did for me was release a majority of the pressure on my sinuses. I always used to get sinus headaches and occasional migraine headaches. Since the surgery, I haven’t had a migraine headache and the sinus pressure has not caused me to miss any workouts; which has gone a long way towards maintaining a steady and productive routine!

You asked if I would recommend it. I cannot lie, it was extremely painful, but that only lasted for a couple weeks. For me the improvement in my sleeping patterns and sinus pressures were enough to say absolutely. If you are not seeing any of those issues though, my body was able to adapt to the breathing without using my nose and still perform at a high level. I think it depends on the severity of your condition whether or not it is right for you. I literally would have passed out if someone duct-taped my mouth shut. It is now an outpatient procedure, but you should never take any surgery lightly!

Thanks. I snore and really notice it on longer runs. I am most worried about losing sense of smell or other downside like it.

My sense of smell was actually made a little stronger... The cartilage in my nose was shaped like an accordion and when they straightened in out I could smell things more intensely but for a shorter duration because it didn't linger in my nose.

Hi Y's Guy,

Since you had your deviated septum surgery, has your running exercise time improved, or the breathing stronger. Also, since your breathing is stronger does that mean that you sweat less due to your increase in oxygen intake.

My sweating has actually increased. I am breathing better and that is giving me more stamina to push harder. Plus I have had many less headaches that would have sidelined my workouts and got me off track. I am now the consistent exerciser that I wanted to be. I notice that when I used to run I could feel my nasal passages swell up and my sinus cavities always gave me fits. Not that I got my nose fixed, I don't feel that at all and I can breathe easier. I still do hard work and get exhausted... I am just able to do a lot more! If you get headaches a lot... especially allergy induced and cluster headaches... this might be right for you... it was for me. My quality of life has improved for 2 weeks of agony.

Does that answer your questions?

Thanks,
Ken
