Cardio is so important... if you're looking to loose weight interval training will become your new best friend. In my opinion interval training is the best way to loose weight!!!
What is interval training you may ask... it is sprinting and recovering!
Going as fast as you can for a period of time and then letting your body recover... and then repeating the process!
A good beginner’s workout might consist of:
Warm up 5 minutes
30 seconds of a sprint
90 seconds of a recovery
Repeat sprint and recovery 6-8 times
Or for a little bit more:
Warm up 5 minutes
60 seconds of a sprint
120 seconds of a recovery
Repeat sprint and recovery 6-8 times
A critical component of interval training is allowing for a sufficient recovery period between the sprint intervals. There are a number of different ways in which you can determine the amount of recovery time which is sufficient. Some people opt to use a recovery period which is equal to the sprint distance while others choose to base the recovery period on their heart rate. Depending on your level of health time/distance may not be as important as listening to your body...
Running or jogging is not the only thing you can do interval training on... you can use it on the following:
Ellipticals, swimming, row machines, stairs, jump rope... virtually any cardio equipment
