For beginners I always tell them that it is the machine or exercise you can push yourself the hardest on and build a sweat. For some they have the muscle memory of riding a bike from their childhood and can rekindle that so the exercise bike is best and they can get a good sweat going. For those who never rode a bike in their lives that is definitely not the best for them. Maybe you swam as a kid and swimming might be best for you. If you're going to walk or run, I wouldn't suggest doing it on concrete (tougher on the knees), but a track treadmill or hike might be awesome!
For people in the intermediate and advanced levels, I would tell them to diversify. Don't let your body get used to the same routine every day. You body does become more efficient and over time burns less energy for the same amount of work. Through your body some curve balls every now and then. If it's easy start amping it up! Play a new sport. Do and interval workout. Join a different class.
I feel like I'm in pretty good shape but I went snowboarding yesterday... and y'all know I'm from Texas so you know snow is not native to Texas. I am sore in places I never use in my regular workouts.
Build a base, then start expanding on it!
