I fell down the entire mountain my first time ever going snowboarding too! I took lessons and it helped a lot. After the first lesson I was able to pick it up pretty fast! I recommend giving lessons a try... once you get it down, snowboarding can be sooo much fun!

I was just the opposite. The first time I went, I didn't take lessons or anything, I just went. No ski background, either (so not a child of a snow). But I did a pretty decent job and really enjoyed it, so I went back and took lessons. Ended up being even worse because, since I knew what I was *supposed* to be doing, I'd over-think every move and screw myself up.

Now, I had to quit after the last time I went (sold my board and boots, too) because my knees weren't able to keep up. I miss going up to the mountains, but I don't miss not being able to walk for a couple days.
Sounds like you're catching on, Ken. Good luck with it and keep us posted!
