I just bought snowboard equipment!!!

A new goal of mine is to get get good at snowboarding so I can go out with my friends and actually enjoy it and be able to walk the next day!

One of our program directors at the YMCA, Andy Pederson, is wanting to take groups out every weekend once snow season starts!!!

Anyone else want to come try this new adventure out with me???

I tried snowboarding for the first time... Let's just say I am awesome... I mastered a superhard trick that only a couple of snowboarders in the world can do... the double-fall-down-stand-up-faceplant-into-the-snow move... A-W-E-S-O-M-E!

My back is still recovering!!! I'm not ready to give up yet though...

I fell down the entire mountain my first time ever going snowboarding too! I took lessons and it helped a lot. After the first lesson I was able to pick it up pretty fast! I recommend giving lessons a try... once you get it down, snowboarding can be sooo much fun! :)

I took a group of kids up to Crystal mountain. I was able to go all the way down the green slope without falling! I think I might be getting the hang of this after all... I still don't think I am up to going down anything fast but at least I can stand up and go down the mountain and it be enjoyable!!!

More to come later... I am going up again on Jan 26th... thanks for asking!

I was just the opposite. The first time I went, I didn't take lessons or anything, I just went. No ski background, either (so not a child of a snow). But I did a pretty decent job and really enjoyed it, so I went back and took lessons. Ended up being even worse because, since I knew what I was *supposed* to be doing, I'd over-think every move and screw myself up. :(

Now, I had to quit after the last time I went (sold my board and boots, too) because my knees weren't able to keep up. I miss going up to the mountains, but I don't miss not being able to walk for a couple days.

Sounds like you're catching on, Ken. Good luck with it and keep us posted!

I tore my ACL a few years ago, and what I learned from that experience and through physical therapy is that if your muscle above your knee, or your quad is not strong, then more pain results in the knee area. After ACL surgery, the physical therapist had me work out my quad muscle like crazy and I didn't even have to wear a knee brace when I went back to running and jumping. The leg that I had surgery on ended up being stronger and having less pain than my good leg! I credit all of it to how strong my physical therapist made me build my quad muscle up to!

The more muscle you have surrounding your knee helps to relieve the pressure off of it and thus resulting in less pain.

Anyway, I'm just saying if you want to try and get your knees strong to give snowboarding another chance, try building up your quad muscles! It might help! :)

I am going night snowboarding on Monday the 26th... wish me luck... I already don't wear my glasses when I ride so the dark might add a whole new degree of difficulty... any suggestions other than prayer would be greatly appreciated

Night skiing is not that dark. They have lights and the white snow is lit up well. It's not as dark as you think it is! Maybe you should look into getting contacts for your eyes though?

You should have seen how red my eyes got the first time I tried to put them in. And then you should have seen how much redder they got when I tried to take them out! It took me like 2 hours!!! Once you learn how to do it and make it work, it works. I think you are not giving it a fair chance. I have very sensitive eyes too, and I also have an issue with touching my eyeball, but I got through it!
