For your basal calorie need, (the number of calories that you burn up at complete rest) just add a zero to your ideal weight. For example, if you weigh 166 pounds, you need 1660 calories per day to maintain your weight. This is assuming your remain at complete rest.

Your actual calorie need will be greater than basal. Your activity level will determine how many more calories than your basal amount that you need.
  • If you are sedentary - add one-third to your basal calorie need
  • If you are moderately active where you get about 90 minutes of exercise per week - add half of your basal calorie need to your basal calorie number.
  • If you are athletic and run or job about 5 miles per day - you can double your basal calorie requirement and still maintain your weight.
