Exercising
Should a woman continue to exercise once she has become pregnant? Aerobic exercise appears to have no harmful effects on the majority of pregnant women. One difference found is that exercising mothers seem to have shorter periods of labor. No significant differences have been found between the birth weight, body length, head circumference or condition at birth of babies born to exercising mothers and those born of mothers who did not exercise. It may be advisable for women who have preeclampsia, a condition characterized by elevated blood pressure, water retention, and albumin in the urine to not exercise while pregnant.
Don't skip meals!
While pregnant, especially during the last three months of pregnancy, women risk "accelerated starvation" and low blood sugar if they skip a meal. Always eat breakfast!
Walking while pregnant
This can benefit both mother and child, according to a British study. Women who walked while pregnant vs. those who did not had shorter labors and less need for pain-relieving medication.
Weight gain in pregnancy
Thin or underweight women should gain the most weight for a healthy pregnancy while overweight women should keep weight gain to a minimum. Weight gain greater than 32 pounds where harmful regardless of the weight of the mother before becoming pregnant.
The added weight of being pregnant comes from an average of a 7.5 pound baby, 1.5 pounds of placenta, 2.5 pounds of amniotic fluid where the baby floats, 2.5 pounds in her uterus, and 1 pound in each breast. There is also an increase of about 4 more pounds in blood volume for a total of about 20 pounds.
