Hot Yoga which can also be referred to as Fire Yoga, was developed by Bikram Choudhury and a LA based company. Basically what it is, is a yoga that is done in a room with a temperature of about 105 degrees fahrenheit with a 40% humidity. Classes usually last about 90 minutes. The reason for doing the yoga in a heated room is because it promotes profuse sweating which is said to rid the body of toxins. It also warms up the body which makes our muscles more flexible for the yoga exercises.

I've been meaning to try hot yoga for a couple years now. I've done quite a few yoga classes in normal temperature, but I've heard that doing one hot yoga class is the equivalent of running about 3 miles! Getting rid of toxins also sounds appealing! My friend does hot yoga all of the time and I just haven't the time to try it with her. It's hard because there are yoga classes at my gym for free. I'd have to pay about 15 dollars per hot yoga class if I were to do it.

Have you ever tried hot yoga, Kellie?

Just curious, how many water breaks do you get? I've always heard that you don't want to go longer than 15 minutes in that type of environment. I hope you aren't damaging your body by the prolonged heat exposure.

I read that you should drink LOTS of water before you start. I'm sure you could probably bring your own water bottle and just keep it next to you during the workout.

In Texas the heat index outside would get up to 105 sometimes and the coaches we mandated to take breaks every 15 minutes or less to avoid damage to the players bodies.

I have not tried it yet but a friend of mine did last week. Yeah I guess you are supposed to drink a ton of water before you go and not eat for two hours before you go. She brought her water in the room with her. She said that once in the class you are not allowed to talk or leave unless you raise your hand and are excused. They do this so that others will not be disrupted. She said she didn't like it so much because she felt trapped and kinda like it was hard to breathe, but then again she is not a yoga person. She also said she was soaking wet when she got out of class.

You're talking about football or another exaustive sport though right ?
There's a big difference between running drills and stretching your leg behind your head.

I wonder if you can bring oxygen tanks like the ones old people carry around with them into a hot yoga room, or if they pump oxygen in.
