That really has a lot of different determining factors. The first question you should ask yourself when determining what to do is: "What is my current activity level?" you can't go from 0 to 60... you will end up hurting yourself or getting discouraged in most cases... Rome wasn't built in a day... neither will you.
Next you want to ask yourself: "What are my goals?" If you want to build muscle you need at least on day recovery time in between workouts... if it's to lose weight or cardio... that can be done everyday.
I personally feel that working out can be done everyday... something active every day for 15 minutes is better that working out for 3 hours twice a week... I don't go to the gym everyday, but I try to fit some form of cardio workout in every day, be it a brisk walk or sprint... it doesn't matter as long as it gets the heart pumping!!!
Really there are a lot of schools of thought out there as to how long is a good workout... it all depends on you... what your level of activity is right now and what you want to focus on. The Surgeon General says a good workout for the average person is a 1 hour block... 2/3 cardio 1/3 strength - 3 days a week... I don't think it's that easy
