Are You Always Cold??

Some people are cold for reasons scienists haven't figured out yet, so maybe all you need is a warm sweater and a couple of extra blankets.

But... if you are always freezing when others are toasty warm, you should give your doctor a call. You could have hypothyroidism, which slows metabolism and reduces body heat.

When not enough thyroid hormone is made, it is called underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism. Symptoms include weight gain, constipation, dry skin, and sensitivity to the cold.

Some Other Reasons Why You Are Always Cold

* Active muscles generate heat, inactive muscles don't. Some experts say this can be caused by having too few carbohydrates in your diet, such as 100% whole wheat, not white flour.

* Low blood sugar

* Poor kidney function

* Iron-deficiency anemia

I am ALWAYS cold and I don't know what the problem is. I just had a physical and the doctor noticed my cold hands but she didn't do any tests on it. I think it was because she knew I didn't have insurance and the tests would be expensive and I looked otherwise pretty healthy. She said if it did get worse to let her know because she would do some thyroid tests and stuff. So I don't know if there is something really wrong with me or not!

Did the doctor tell you how much a thyroid test would cost?

I had a girlfriend years ago who was always cold and wore a sweater all the time even though she was from KY and we were in FL. She was really really skinny.

I used to get cold really fast when I was skinny, uncontrollable shivering cold sometimes when my larger buddy was standing out there in house shorts and a white beater. I don't get cold like that anymore now that I've got a little weight on me.

I think skinny people just lose their core temp faster. :)

I totally agree with you. When I was 50 pounds over weight, I had a built in heater inside me... I was more hot than cold. If it was hot outside, I was super hot, and if it was cold out, I was comfortable.

But now that I have lost that weight, I am freezing all the time.

No, she didn't say how much, but she acted like it wasn't cheap!

I've been around the same body % fat my entire life and I used to not be cold in my younger years, so I don't think it has anything to do with my weight. I really have no idea why my hands, especially, are always cold!

To me that sounds like a problem I have sometimes. I feel a bit colder because I am in better shape. One, I don't have the extra insulation and Jobert and Ziggy aluded to in the previous posts. There is a second reason; I have gotten into better cardio shape so my resting heart rate is lower than it used to be. The heart beat regulates the blood flow through the body. The faster your heart rate, the more (warm) blood gets pushed through your body. The less your heart beats, the less blood flow is pumpimg, in turn not warming your body especially in the extremities like the hands and feet. Poor circulation or a really low resting heart rate can cause cold hands and feet. They have special sleeves to promote blood flow for serious cases... usually it is used for blockages in viens in the legs.

Morale of the story... get healthy... just not too healthy... cause it's a cold world when you're at the top of your game! :haha:

Oh, yeah... I've seen people wearing special sleeves before. But do those sleeves help hands being cold? Where can you buy those? It might be worth it for me to give them a chance.
