Did you know that as many as 283 species of bacteria can thrive in ordinary office dust, including streptococcus, which is the main cause of strep throat, and staphylococcus aureus, which can lead to MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant staph infection. It is a good idea to wipe down your workstation, keyboard, and phone regularly with a disinfectant such as Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner.

I just got done cleaning my desk area and it sure was dusty! Maybe that is why I am fighting a cold right now. :worried:

I don't like the concept of using disinfectant all over the place- in the toilet and bathroom, fine, in the kitchen, fine, but for everywhere else, nah.

Exposure to germs and allergens is what gets a good resistance built up- so many kids are brought up in near-sterile environments, is it any wonder we have so many of them with so many allergies. Kids were never that susceptible to those sorts of things when i was growing up, that's for sure.

Vive la dust and dirt!

I remember when I was a kid my mom used to disinfect the heck out of everything. From the toilet to misting the bed mattresses in-between sheet changes and everything between. She's not a germaphobe, she just wanted to make sure my brother and I stayed healthy.

It seems like I was almost always taking erythromycin (EES) for breathing problems as a kid. I'm supposedly allergic to penicillin and EES is an alternative, though as I get older and still haven't had chickenpox I'm wondering if coincidence had them mistake chickenpox as an allergic reaction the penicillin when I was really young, I've been exposed to chickenpox a few times and unless I have some sort of superhuman immunity there's no reason I shouldn't have had it yet, but that's s different story.

Anywho, I remember when she would go crazy with that Lysol stuff. That stuff can fill the air quick !
I don't like to be anywhere around when someone sprays that stuff, I don't know what's worse, breathing in dust or breathing those chemicals. I still like to spray down bed mattresses between sheet changes, but I have to turn off the ceiling fan and just do a small area at a time so it doesn't fill the air.

Compared to most people I know, my desk stays relatively uncluttered. I can count everything on my desk right now using three hands. I'm a slacker when it comes to dusting it though. I have a small folded towel I keep my drink on because I got tired of the cork coasters I have getting waterlogged and my cups sweat a lot with ice tea. When that towel starts to seem funky I use it to dust the desk off real quick then swap it with a new one.

I don't think you should go crazy with the disinfectant stuff, but I also don't think living in dirt and dust is a good idea either. There is a happy medium you can take. Your kids can go outside to play in the dirt.. you don't have to live in it.

I would clean but I have too many piles here and don't want to mess up the mess... it's like planned chaos!

I can count what's on my desk using 5 fingers. Yep, only 5 things on my desk. Course that's not counting the dust. ;)

Is dust and dust mites the same thing?

I found this on the web ...
What are Dust Mites?
Dust mites are tiny insects that are invisible to the naked eye. Every home has dust mites. They feed on human skin flakes and are found in mattresses, pillows, carpets, upholstered furniture, bedcovers, clothes, stuffed toys and fabric and fabric-covered items. Body parts and feces from dust mites can trigger asthma in individuals with allergic reactions to dust mites, and exposure to dust mites can cause asthma in children who have not previously exhibited asthma symptoms.

I just did some research online and I'm pretty sure dust and dust mites are not the same thing. Dust mites live among the dust and dust is composed primarily of things like human skin and hair, waxes, pollen, mold, fungi, lichen, tiny particles of wood, paint, fibers from fabrics such as wool, nylon, rayon, acrylic, foam rubber, sheet rock, plant and vegetable matter, insect parts, and of course every form of
pollution.
