Fat floats and muscle sinks. Muscle is simply a lot heavier than fat.

So as you build a little bit of muscle mass and lose fat, you may not see a dramatic reduction in scale numbers right away.

But, you will see reductions in waist size and overall shape!!.

Muscles are constantly feeding on calories. Every pound of muscle burns between 40 and 120 calories a day just to sustain itself, while every pound of fat feeds on only 1 to 3 calories.

So what does this mean? Should we be eating a lot of calories to sustain our muscles??? Or wait, maybe it means that the more muscles we have, the more they burn those calories! On the other hand, the less muscle we have, the fat just lets the calories build up?

I would say the latter, yeah, the more muscles we have, the more they burn those calories!

Beans

Beans are a high fiber, low fat, vitamin packed source of protein.

Beans are high in antioxidants. Black beans are best, followed by lentils, black soybeans and red kidney beans.

Beans lower cholesterol. Comparison - Half cup of pinto beans a day lowers cholesterol about 8 percent, to half cup of oatmeal a day lowers cholesterol by about 2 percent.

Bean prevent diseases. Studies show that nutrients in legumes may protect against Alzheimer's and breast and colon cancers.

Pomegranate Juice
Dr. Dean Ornish, MD and his colleagues at the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, in 2005, found that drinking an 8 ounce glass of pomegranate juice a day could begin to reverse the progression of coronary heart disease in only 3 months.

Note:
Talk to your doctor before you start drinking pomegranate juice. Pomegranate juice may affect metabolism of some prescription medications.
Pomegranate juice may also cause blood pressure to become too low when combined with certain blood pressure medications.
Allergic reactions are possible, even in people who have eaten pomegranates for years.

Alarming statistics that reinforce the need for increased awareness and action...

  • 18.2 million Americans have diabetes, and nearly 1/3 are unaware that they have the disease.
  • More than 64 percent of the U.S. adult population is overweight or obese.
  • More than 31 million people in the United States have diagnosed asthma. Although a lot is known about how to prevent its symptoms and consequences, many people are not applying this knowledge.
  • Heart disease and stroke account for more than 40 percent of all deaths each year.
  • Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than half a million people each year.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is poised to meet these challenges through initiatives like Steps to a HealthierUS and Healthy People 2010. Worth Repeating...
  • Eat slowly so your brain can get the message that your stomach is full. It takes about 20 minutes after we stop eating to get that full feeling.
  • Take the amount of food that is equal to one serving and eat it "off a plate" instead of eating straight out of a large box or bag.
  • Avoid eating in front of the TV or while busy with other activities. This helps you pay attention to what you are eating and lets you fully enjoy the smell and taste of the food.
  • When you are at a social event, pay attention to how much you eat.

This one is a good point. A lot of times we are at social events with food available to munch on all night long. If you don't pay attention to what you have already eaten, you will just keep eating even more. By the time you get home you will wish you had paid more attention to what you ate!

I have problem with eating while at work behind a desk... I have gone through a whole bag of peanut m&ms before I realize I have even started eating them... It is hard not to eat when I'm bored and trapped... any suggestions?

I had that same problem when I was stuck behind a desk all day. I was so bored that eating was a way to waste time. The most effective way I found to treat that problem was to never put yourself in the situation to be able to eat a whole bag of peanut m&m's at once. You can do that by never bringing a bag to work with you! :)

Maybe ask your coworkers to store their community treats in a place that you don't visit much so you aren't tempted to eat them! :?:
