Factoids

Monosodium glutamate (MSG), the additive found in many Chinese foods, may play a role in messing up the body's metabolic systems. A taste enhancer, MSG is used to overstimulate (some say poison) the glutamine receptors of the brain, so we sense salt and sweets more (but not bitter and sour tastes, interestingly). The downside? That may cause us to eat more and to have higher insulin levels.

Two spices have been shown to aid in waist-management:

Red Pepper and Cinnamon.

"waist" or "waste" ?

I only ask because both would make sense there, with peppers being good for reducing the risk of colon cancer and all. :)

The factoid I found was for "waist" in a manual for waist management by Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D. (just giving proper credit due) focusing on diabetes, since carrying extra belly fat will more likely increase your risk of diabetes, plus heart attack and stroke. But yeah, I have heard that too, so guess it's good for both.

Another question would be how much red pepper and cinnamon would have to be consumed to reap the benefits? They didn't say in the manual I was reading.

Pepper and cinnamin sound like two ingredients I'd only ever find together in some sort of Thai or Oriental food come to think of it.

Here's one about hot peppers, I didn't know about the pain relief before.
Capsaicin, the chemical that makes chili peppers hot, also dilates blood vessels and relieves pain from arthritis, muscle aches, and sprains.

Fact:

One early sign of insulin resistance in a few people is the appearance of a brown, thick, velvety patch of skin behind your neck. This condition, called acanthosis nigricans, is an early sign of metabolic syndrome, which is associated with high blood pressure plus elevated levels of blood lipids and blood sugar.

Fact:

Eat anti-inflammatory foods, such as green tea, omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish, chia, canola oil, freshly ground flax seeds and walnuts), coffee, vegetables and fruit, to help counteract the effects of obesity.

Eating Strategies

Eat a little healthy fat before your meal (like on handful of nuts - 6 walnut halves, 12 almonds, 20 peanuts) and pause 25 minutes to allow the satiety (feeling of satisfaction or fullness) signal to go from your brain to your stomach so you don't overate during your meal.

Avoid the Alcohol Binge

For weight loss, avoid drinking excessive alcohol, more than one glass for women in a day, more than two for men, not solely because of its own calories, but also because of the calories it inspires you to consume later.

Cholesterol Levels

In 2005, more than 106 million people were told that they had total blood cholesterol levels that were high - 200 mg/dL or higher.

Preventing Obesity

Breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of obesity in children. Maternity care practices in hospitals and birthing centers can affect breastfeeding rates.

More than a quarter of children born in 2004 were never breastfed.

I was, and I didn't get to be a fat guy untill my mid 20s, which is still being fairly easy to get back under control now.

Well, guess that proves that fact has some merit to it.

Did you know that....

Most of the one million calories you consume every year are burned without your ever thinking about it.

Only 15 to 30 percent of our calories are burned through intentional physical activity such as walking or dancing.

Any movement speeds metabolism, every increase in body temperature of one degree increases your metabolic rate by 14 percent and when you sleep, your metabolic rate decreases by 10 percent.

When you starve yourself for more than twelve hours, your metabolic rate actually goes down by 40 percent.
