Green tea is very good for your body. I have been drinking it for the past year. Before I started drinking green tea, I would get sick all the time. Ever since I started drinking it, I've rarely gotten sick! I love it! The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times, using it to treat everything from headaches to depression. Scientific research has shown that these are some of the examples of why green tea is so good for you.

  • helps reduce chance of cancer
  • helps reduce rheumatoid arthritis
  • helps reduce high cholesterol levels
  • helps reduce cariovascular disease
  • helps reduce infection
  • helps make your immune system stronger
  • Increases metabolic rate and help burn fat
  • Boosts mental alertness
  • Lowers stress hormone levels
  • Reduces high blood pressure.

You'll get most benefit out of freshly brewed hot tea that has steeped for three to five minutes, a process that helps to bring out the catechins (polyphenolic antioxidant plant metabolites). Also, try not to add in any sugar or sweeteners so you can get all of the benefits. Typically, you'll want to drink 250 mg to 400 mg of green tea per day or more to get all of the benefits (equals about three cups per day).

I heard on the KVI 570 radio station on the Jerry N. Mixon, M.D. program, that green tea helps protect against the risk of prostate cancer. Jerry N. Mixon, M.D. holds both a BS in Microbiology from University of Utah 1972 and his MD from University of Utah 1976. His website is at longevitymedicalclinic.com.

I read from the cancer.gov website that green tea contains higher levels of antioxidants than black tea.

Also from the cancer.gov website, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) researchers are investigating the therapeutic use of green tea. One recently completed but unpublished NCI trial studied the antitumor effect of green tea among prostate cancer patients. The 42 patients drank 6 grams of green tea, or about 4 cups, daily for four months. However, only one patient experienced a short-lived improvement, and nearly 70 percent of the group experienced unpleasant side effects such as nausea and diarrhea. The study concluded drinking green tea has limited antitumor benefit for prostate cancer patients.

From the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) PubMed website I read the incidence of prostate cancer is much lower in Asian than Western populations. Given that environmental factors such as dietary habits may play a major role in the causation of prostate cancer and the high consumption of green tea in Asian populations, this low incidence may be partly due to the effects of green tea. Green tea may be associated with a decreased risk of advanced prostate cancer. Sept 29 2007.

I suggest it would be a good idea to do some extensive research on this subject.

Green tea is also an effective way to burn fat.

According to a study by the University of Geneva, green tea contains plant chemicals called "catechin polyphenols" that increase fat oxidation (fat burning) in the body.

When I brew tea in my coffee maker, I usually toss in a green tea bag or two with the regular tea. It's pretty good that way.

That's a good idea considering a lot of people don't like the taste of green tea. Green tea is definitely a taste I think you have to get accustomed to.

I think that's a great idea too, I never thought of that.

I agree too, because I hated the taste of green tea when I first started drinking it, and I had to doctor it up with honey. But now, I drink it, "without honey", and without the ewwwwwww!!

That's weird, I've always liked the taste of green tea, especially in ice cream form! Maybe it is because I used to drink a ton of tea as a kid. regular, green, blueberry, any type really. Have you ever had blueberry tea, it is yummy too!

Do they make green tea ice cream???
I don't know if this has been posted or not, but I read that green tea helps flush toxins out of your system. I hope that's true, because it's pretty easy to drink 3 or 4 cups of green tea a day.

I have never had blueberry tea. Actually, I've never heard of it. I have read that blueberries are really good for us, so I wonder if blueberry tea is really good for us. Anyone know about that??

Green tea ice cream doesn't sound good to me, but maybe I'd try it and see if it was good, well, maybe I wouldn't try it, because if I liked it, wouldn't that be defeating the purpose, since ice cream isn't good for us? I think I will stick with the green tea by itself. I don't need to start up another bad habit. ;)

I read that overweight or obese exercisers burned off 3 more pounds and 7 percent more belly fat when they drank green tea instead of another beverage with the same calories.

I also read that 3 cups of green tea a day cut the risk of stroke by 21 percent and that black tea was protective too. And... in a study of 940 men, the more green tea a man drank, the less likely he was to have gum disease.

I think they do make a green tea ice cream, actually I just looked up it... Haagen Dazs has green tea flavor out there! I'm not sure you would be getting nearly the amount of benefits though as the drink version.

Yeah, I wouldn't think so either, I think it's a good advertising gimmick.

My 9th grade math teacher, Mr. Weil, once told us that ice cream had more vitamins and minerals than breakfast cereal. I always just kinda took his word for it, but today I decided to see if that claim holds any water.

Under the part that looks like a product nutrition label in the following links there's a sentence that says "See more extended nutritional details", click the "see more" part and look at the vitamin/mineral values of these two products.

Chocolate Ice Cream
Frosted Flakes Breakfast Cereal

Now, if you eat something like Total or another health cereal that claim probably doesn't hold water. But as far as some of the cereals people regularly feed their kids, it looks like they would be better off feeding them ice cream for breakfast if the kids are active enough to burn off the stuff that's not good for them. :cap-smile:

I agree that ice cream is probably better than a lot of the cereals they have out there for children. Most of them, like Frosted Flakes, are just full of tons of sugar and not much else. Reese's Puffs, Coco Pops, Cookie Crisp, are just a few of the others that are full of tons of sugar.
