Why is high blood pressure bad?High blood pressure narrows your arteries and makes your heart work harder. This increases your risk of having a heart attack or a stroke.
If you have high blood pressure along with any of the following risk factors, you are at a greater risk for heart attack, stroke or other complications.
- Age - risk goes up as you get older
- Gender - men are at a greater risk
- Tobacco use
- Having diabetes
- Having high cholesterol
- Having a close relative who has had a heart attack at a young age (under 55 for men; under 60 for women)
- Not getting enough exercise
- Eating an unhealthy diet (high in saturated fat and salt)
- Being overweight
Some ways you can reduce your risk include not using tobacco, eating less salt, maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active (try to get at least 30 minutes of activity on most days), eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables, and use alcohol in moderation.
