I have always been under the impression that we were born with all of the brain cells we would ever have and that was it. New studies are now contradicting that. Through a process called Neurogenesis, we actually grow new brain cells. This occurs at any age. Building new cells is not easy. Scientists say we must learn something new; it must be something in which we must use all of our focus on. A chef cannot learn a new recipe and consider that learning something new due to the fact he knows how to cook. A chef must learn how to play a musical instrument or how to ride a motorcycle. Not only does this help build new brain cells but it also helps build new connections in the brain; which is even more important. Contrary to popular belief size doesn't always matter. More connections to neuro-pathways are more important than the amount of brain cells. Building connections in many different ways is essential in combating many brain diseases. Though it doesn't cure the diseases it helps delay by many years the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer's. Think of building these new pathways as armor for the brain. Get out and learn something new: A new language, a new hobby, a new game. Never stop learning; your brain will reward you for it!

I wanted to get the definition of Neurogenesis: Neurogenesis (birth of neurons) is the process by which neurons are generated. Most active during pre-natal development, neurogenesis is responsible for populating the growing brain.

I always heard about ways that you can lose brain cells, but I don't think I ever realized that you can also grow new ones. It makes sense though that by learning new things you can build them. I need to use my brain more and challenge it with something new. I'm not sure what that should be yet.

Ever wanted to learn a new language or hobby? It can be anything really... anything that makes you focus your mind on one specific task. By trying snowboarding I learned a new hobby. If my mind wanders I fall... if my mind focuses I still fall... but my falls are becoming less frequent and painful every time... I am learning! What is your next chance to learn something new?!?

I have the time right now to learn something new, but I still don't know what I want to learn. I really don't have the desire to learn a new language since all of the people I know speak English :) . I'll have to think about it and get back to you.
