There are some preventive actions you can take to avoid getting athlete's foot. Moisture and warmth aid in the growth of athlete's foot fungus. By knowing this you can take in mind the following measures to be preventive:

  • Allow your shoes to dry thoroughly between wearings.
  • Change your socks frequently.
  • Avoid deodorant soaps. They tend to remove surface protecting oils and may irritate the skin.
  • Cornstarch powder can help absorb perspiration.

Go barefoot or in flip-flops when you can.

I forget which cultures where it's customary to take your shoes off at the door and wear sandals, but I can't help but wonder if they have lower rates of athletes foot where it's practiced.

I'm always barefoot at home. Never had athletes foot, so that's proof. :)

Hate wearing shoes and socks indoors.

I don't wear shoes indoors, but I do wear socks... especially in the winter months. It gets too cold here not too! I don't get athlete's foot though because I never sit around in wet socks. After exercising, the first thing I have to do is take off my sweaty socks because I can't stand the feel of them!

I'll even nip out into the garden with bare feet, even in winter. I wouldn't stay out there long, mind!

Everyone needs a tub full of beach sand that they can just dig their feet through while watching TV or something, kinda like a foot soaker. Beach sand is awesome.

Do you think there are any health benefits associated with soaking your feet into beach sand other than it feeling good? I wonder...

I bet it would be good for callouses, especially with coral sand. The key would be moving your feet around and rubbing them together as much as you can. Maybe put the sand in the oven for a little while first to heat it up and relax muscles.

I've walked on beaches with warm sand before (not in Washington), and I remember it feeling good. Heating up sand and soaking my feet in them sounds really relaxing right now!

Alright it seems coral sand isn't such a good idea. There's notes of coral and harvesting damaging the environment and that's not something we want to do with all the focus on going green.

This leads me to an interesting page I found while looking for sand.

Of course, I'm just going to take a bike ride down to the beach to get mine. :P
