Your Liver
Did you know that your liver is about the size of a football, produces more heat than any other organ in your body, and weighs about 3 pounds in an average size person??

Wow... the size of a football!?!? No wonder my belly is sooooooo big!!

I think maybe they were saying that the liver is about the size length wise as a football... probably not the same size round wise as the football... I just looked up a photo of the human liver. Look at the photo, that thing does look pretty big in our body! But it's located up higher than your stomach, so if your stomach is big, I don't think it is the liver causing it to be big! ;)

I never would have guessed the liver produces the most heat. If I had to guess I would have thought it would be the heart that produced the most heat with all of the exercising it does.

I think the fact that it produces so much heat is probably why it's such a good indicator of time of death. The rate of cooling must be very predictable, and if it's so warm to start with, it would take longer to cool down. That gives quite a window after death during which the liver can be used to establish TOD.

Then again, maybe they use liver temperature as a gauge because they like sticking pointy bits of metal into bodies! :haha:
