It's not that I don't think we should enjoy it, I more or less want to know exactly why we do.

I understand.

I looked up some info on taste buds. I found this interesting about animals. Did you know that a lot of insects use their mouths to taste flavors just as we do, but some also can use other parts of their bodies to taste? For example, a butterfly tastes food with their mouth and their feet and ants can taste food with their mouths and with their antennae. People can only taste food and liquids with the taste buds in their mouths, but we can sense flavors by using our sense of smell too.

I found this interesting information from the kidshealth.org website:
Quote:
The average person has about 10,000 taste buds and they're replaced every 2 weeks or so. But as a person ages, some of those taste cells don't get replaced. An older person may only have 5,000 working taste buds. That's why certain foods may taste stronger to you than they do to adults. Smoking also can reduce the number of taste buds a person has.

I took some time trying to look up information about why we actually taste and the purpose of tasting, but all I could find was information about how the actual taste buds work. I couldn't find any information about why!

Joebert's theories about the body needing certain nutrients so that is why we crave certain foods does make sense though.

Maybe there are scientific reasons as to why we have taste buds, but I sure haven't had any luck finding them! Maybe we get to taste and have pleasure out of eating certain foods only because that's how God designed our bodies to be? Maybe there is no technical reason for tasting?

I know that almost everything that taste bitter is bad for us to ingest and that we should not consume it, it is our natural instinct!

I didn't see chocolate on the list?!? What are your opinions on Dark Chocolate... healthy / not healthy?

Dark chocolate does have health benefits. Of course, the health benefits won't matter if you don't eat the dark chocolate in moderation.

Dark chocolate is better than other chocolates because it comes from cacao beans (or cocoa beans), which grow on the cacao tree and are full of natural plant nutrients.

Here are some of the benefits:

  • Lowers blood pressure
  • It is high in antioxidants - dark chocolate, but not milk chocolate or dark chocolate eaten with milk -- is a potent antioxidant.
  • Promotes blood flow
  • It does not send your blood sugar levels spiking

There is a difference in bitterness and sourness. Sour taste detects the acidity levels where as bitterness is associated with the ability to taste numerous natural bitter compounds, a large number of which are known to be toxic.

Sour is much less offensive than bitter to me

When milk goes bad, is that a bitter or sour taste? More of a bitter one huh?

I think so, milk isn't acidic as far as I know of.

I like a nice sour lemon now and then, it's a good workout for my facial muscles.

Ha, I actually get a facial workout before the sour food ever touches my mouth! Do you ever get that feeling of what the sour taste is going to taste like before you ever taste it? Or am I just weird? :lone:

That happens to me sometimes.
There's certain alcohols that make my face do the sour dance before I taste them more often than sour foods though, such as vodka and gin.

I remember when I was a kid and I ate the sour patch kids candies, my tongue would always start watering to get ready for the sour taste before the candy even entered my mouth!
