Today, I read that even at room temperature, a very small amount of the plastic in the plastic container will migrate into the water and increase certain health risks.

I didn't know that plastic can seep into the water just from the water being stored in the plastic bottle. I always thought that only happened when you microwaved food (or liquids) in plastic containers.

I wonder if that applies to milk and juices too, and other drinks in plastic bottles!?!?

Be sure to thank him for that when your girlfriend tricks you into getting that hair removed with hot wax. Or if you're as dumb as I am, with chemical hair remover that you're supposed to shake well before using without shaking up at all and end up screaming in pain from the burning sensation while you're in the shower trying to rinse the stuff off, only to have her come in and read the do not rinse off with water warning from the label she just now decided to read even though she's an expert with this stuff.

Sometimes I seriously wonder if the things my dad used to tell me were just to set me up for situations like that.

That is hilarious... in a painful way! Couldn't she have told you that when she heard the water first turn on? What did she think you were doing in the bathroom... watering the plants?!?

I don't think dads are smart enough to set us up... I think they just get lucky... But they sure do get a laugh out of it after we tell them them what happened!

I read that water in plastic bottles is especially bad to drink after they have been sitting in a hot car. During that time, the bad stuff in the plastic is able to leak into the water and it is not good to drink.

If you do drink water in plastic bottles, try to never leave it in a hot car, and if you do, it's probably best to not drink it!

Is this story about "BPA" related to the plastic in water bottles being bad for you ?
http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/ ... 3679.story

If it is, it seems like we'll be fine if states continue to ban the stuff. :)

I'm not sure. The article says:
Quote:
BPA is commonly used to harden plastic and make it shatterproof, and to line the insides of certain food containers. Experts disagree whether it is harmful to humans, but it has been restricted in Canada.

Sounds like the experts are saying they don't think BPA is harmful to humans.

However, I guess some scientists say it is harmful:
Quote:
Some scientists and activists believe BPA mimics some effects of the hormone estrogen and that long-term exposure is harmful to humans. Animal studies have linked BPA with breast, prostate and reproductive system abnormalities and some cancers.

I was just reading an article a couple months ago about this, in the January 2009 readers digest about BPA in baby bottles. It said...

What: Bisphenol A (BPA).

Where: Best known for leaching from plastic water bottles, the chemical is also in many baby and child products.

Controversy:
In 2008 Congress voted to ban phthalates from kids' products; now focus is on BPA.
The FDA has said the chemical is safe, but other experts are concerned it may impair brain development and cause behavioral changes in children.

Bottom Line:
"Infants and children are most at risk, and some precautions seem to be wise," advises Yale researcher Tibor Hajszan, MD. "Simply avoid baby bottles and toys that contain BPA (a '7' on the bottom may mean it's made with BPA). Use glass baby bottles and paper cups." Many companies are now making BPA-free products.

Besides adding to pollution, using plastic bottles may be toxic to your health. The chemical called bisphenol A may be responsible for birth defects, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and even ADD.

Bisphenol is present in hard plastic bottles and lined tin cans and is present in plastic food containers and some plastic wraps. Instead, use reusable glass thermoses for water storage or you can even reuse an old glass pop bottle for carrying water. And drink real tap water.
