Eat 1 Ounce of Nuts a Day
Nuts raise HDL ("good") cholesterol and decrease inflammation.
Nuts have a heart benefit too.
Nuts have healthy omega-3 fatty acids, healthy protein, and some fiber.
Nuts that are raw, fresh and unsalted have the most benefit.

You can roast your own shelled walnuts in the oven at 350 degrees for about 9 minutes. Doing this won't cause any bad fats or dangerous chemical acrylamides to form.

Does it matter what kind of nuts? Aren't there nuts that are better for you than others? I mean peanuts aren't really good for you, are they?

As long as you are not allergic to nuts... peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachios, and walnuts are good choices, and raw and unsalted are best.

Make sure you don't overdo it though, nuts are high in calories that can add up fast. Eat nuts in moderation. Use nuts as a substitute for less healthy fats, like saturated fats in meats, eggs and dairy products, that way you are gaining all the benefits of nuts, without adding extra calories.

Also... you would be defeating the purpose of the healthy benefits of nuts if they are covered with chocolate, sugar or salt.

For me they would be, since I hardly ever eat candy :!: :!: :D

OK... I'm just kidding, no, peanut m&m's wouldn't be a good choice for me, or you, or anyone, so peanut m&m's is a big no no... for this post anyway!!

Emerald has flavor coated almonds in on-the-go canisters that are really good. I think the two kinds I tried are limited time things though. :(

I tried the "Cinnamon Roast" and "Cocoa Roast" kinds. They're really good, there's just enough of the coating to give you the taste, it's not caked on. :D
If you were a smoker, you probably wouldn't even notice the taste, it's that faint.

I wish I liked the taste of almonds more than I do since they are supposed to be a great healthy snack when eaten in moderation, but I just can't seem to acquire a taste for them. :(

I've always found it strange that almonds aren't poisonous.

I read a book on how to survive once when I was in my early teens, and it said if something tastes of almonds it's probably poisonous, don't eat it. The fact that almonds aren't, so we can taste them and know the taste of the things we should avoid is just bizarre.

Go figure. :?

I've never heard that if something tastes like almonds it's probably poisonous. I'm curious though... how do you test the way something tastes... I mean when you taste it and it tastes like almonds, you then know it is poisonous, but how do you stop yourself from swallowing that poison that you just tasted????

The concept was that you tested something unfamiliar in stages.

A taste with the tip of the tongue first, then suck for a second or two, then chew, and finally swallow. Not all in one go either- this had to be done gradually to see if there was any adverse effects after each stage.

The whole concept was that by doing this, any effects would be minimized. Yes, still a possibility of poisoning yourself, but the risk is greatly reduced. If you are unfamiliar with the foods around you, this method does have its risks, but as the alternative is starvation, they would be risks I'd be willing to take! :D

I see, that makes sense! Does seem like a good method if you are unfamiliar with the food around you and on the verge of starvation. Good to know.

Are you sure it didn't say "smells like almonds" ?

Cyanide smells like almonds, it will kill you pretty quick.

'Smells' like almonds was the first phase I think, now you mention it. If it smelt of them, then don't even taste it
If not, then proceed. If it tastes like almonds, don't proceed. Otherwise, try a stage at a time.
