Feed Your Skin

What you put inside your body eventually shows on the outside. More than 100 dermatologists analyzed the skin of about 4,000 women ages 40 to 74. Then they looked at eating habits, weight, history of sun exposure, and whether the women had hit menopause.

Anti-aging diet secrets the doctors uncovered:

Vitamin C

Women with higher C intake, mostly from foods like orange juice, citrus fruits, and tomatoes (as opposed to supplements), had significantly fewer wrinkles. C is key in the formation of collagen, which repairs damage and keeps skin strong and elastic.

Linoleic acid

Linoleic acid is protective. Those who ate plenty of this nutrient had skin that was less dry and fragile. Known to help skin maintain moisture, it's found in green leafy vegetables, nuts, and plant-based oils.

Excess carbohydrates and fat speed the aging of skin. Women who consumed more carbs and fat had more wrinkles.
I found this info from the Reader's Digest - July 2008, on their website at http://www.rd.com/living-healthy

Something else that can dramatically affect the amount of wrinkles you have is if you smoke or not. I was watching a show on Oprah a while ago and they did a computerized photo of a lady of what she would like like at age 60 if she were to continue smoking. And then they did a comparison photo of the same lady of what she would look like at age 60 if she were to stop smoking today. I think the lady was around 40 years old and had been smoking for about 18 - 20 years. The difference in the two pictures were amazing. Just seeing that photo demonstration makes me want to never pick up smoking.

Another thing that speeds along the aging of skin is over-exposure to the sun. People who like to tan a lot will often find themselves with more wrinkles. Wear sunscreen and avoid excessive periods of exposure to the sun and your skin will thank you for it!

Yeah, same with California! I remember seeing a lot of dark, wrinkly older people there when I lived in the Bay Area.

Come to think of it there were a lot of old tan wrinkly guys on Clearwater pier 60 when I went last week too. I've seen a lot of fishermen that have these dark tans they've obviously been working on their whole life, and they'e always pretty wrinkly. construction workers too.

I think next time I'm at Clearwater Beach or Pier 60 looking at the unbelievably tan sunbathers in bikinis I might see them a different way.

Wait a second, dangit ! Now I'm going to think of wrinkly old ladies every time I go to the beach. That sucks !

I bet you won't look at pasty pale people the same way either! The glare will keep them young looking...

Some more foods for better skin... these are by Dr. Michael F. Roizen

Eggs,
Legumes,
Avocados,
Nuts,
Soybeans... all contain biotin. A deficiency in biotin can lead to dry skin and brittle hair and nails.

Salmon contains astaxanthin, a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity so you will have fewer fine lines.

Omega 3's put shine in your hair and help skin look and feel young, for example, from walnuts, DHA fortified foods, and lemon flavored cod liver oil.

Green Tea can protect against sun damage.

And can you believe this one...

Pomegranates ... Apply topically to the skin to help the skin make more collagen and speed healing.

Pomegranates eh ?
Any ideas for good ways to get something from them to apply ?

I know they require a lot of patience to eat. I'm thinking stick them in a blender and go from there for the skin.

Good point!! ha! I just report what I read!! lol
The blender idea might be the way to go. I figured it meant to just rub the seeds all over your skin. Other than that, I have no idea. It all sounds like a messy job though.

Just go down to Emerald Smoothie and order a Pomegranate-Blueberry smoothie and then rub that all over... That's how Elvis did it! :haha:

Just kidding... sorry if there were any Elvis lovers out there that I offended... I'm sure Elvis never got in a drug induced state and started getting up close and personal with a fruit smoothie... at least not that we can prove, anyways!

You can juice a pomegranate by:
  • Cutting it in half, then juice it like an orange

    OR
  • Remove the seeds and mash with a fork or blend it in a blender, then strain to get the juice.
Pomegranate juice can be refrigerated for 3 days or frozen for 6 months in an airtight container.
