Have you ever wondered what are the basic functions of foods? Obviously we need to eat food in order to live and survive, but foods are made of of different components which have specific functions.

Food is usually composed of:
  • carbohydrates
  • proteins
  • fats
  • water

Now I will list some of the main functions for these categories of food.

Carbohydrates provide energy for basic functions and all muscular work. Carbohydrates require less water to digest than proteins or fats and are the most common source of energy in living things. Carbohydrates are not essential nutrients in humans as the body can obtain all its energy from protein and fats. Foods with carbohydrates include fruits, pasta, potatoes, rice, bread, and milk.

Proteins and fat are necessary building components for body tissue and cells and are also a source of energy for most organisms. Foods with protein include meat, fish, milk, cheese, nuts, and seeds.

Fats provides energy stores for muscular work and the transportation of vitamins. Fat is included in oils, butter, nuts, seeds, and cheese.

Water maintains all bodily functions. The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water depending on body size. To function properly, the body requires between one and seven liters of water per day to avoid dehydration.

The purpose of the food in a human body is to provide energy to the human body so it can live. In order for a human body to move and breathe, it needs energy.

When a person eats food, it goes into the stomach to get digested. After the food is digested, it is then mixed with a person's blood where it can reach every cell of the human body. Your lungs also adds oxygen into the blood. When the food and oxygen is mixed, it produces energy.
