Canola oil or vegetable oil? Which is better for you? Which adds more flavor? Just curious what people think. Or is there another oil out there that is good to use?

I use canola or olive depending on what I'm making.

I tend to use canola for things that have few ingredients to them, or popcorn, because I don't really like the taste of olive oil. I use olive oil for things where the taste is likely to be overpowered by other flavors because I've always heard that olive oil is one of the better oils for you as far as cooking is concerned.

My dad swears by peanut oil, but oddly enough he will only "spring for it" when he's going to fry a turkey on the holidays.

Popcorn made with canola oil is really good! I don't even need to add butter to it because it is tasty enough the way it turns out.

I agree.

I've got a small teflon sauce pan with a glass lid that makes a perfect portion of popcorn for me. I cover the bottom of the pan with a layer of canola oil about as thick as a popcorn kernel, nearly cover the bottom (its an art...) of the pan with popcorn kernels, crank the burner on high, and once one pops I cover it, wait for a little less than half of it to pop, turn off the burner, then dump it in a bowl with a little salt once the popping is nearly silent and the lid is lifted up off the pan. I hate using a larger pan where I have to constantly shake it. When I make enough for everyone I'd rather make it multiple times in my portion sized pan because I never burn any of it in this pan.

I tried putting salt into the oil while it was popping one time, that was a bad idea. I ended up burning my tongue with scalding hot salt because I just stick my tongue in the bowl and eat what sticks to it instead of using my hands.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to have to try making popcorn with canola oil. I've been using vegetable oil, I want to see if I can taste a difference.
