I bet you will after you read this. 39% of the packaged salads tested contained "bacteria that are common indicators of poor sanitation and fecal contamination." And this despite the fact that such bagged salads often display claims of "pre-washed" or "triple-washed" and attract customers who consider them cleaner and safer.

I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen someone dump these bagged salads right into a bowl with some dressing and eat it immediately. I've done it myself a few times I'm sure. :worried:

P.S. -- It was not easy to walk away from this topic without cracking a tossed salad joke...

I don't think I've ever washed the lettuce that comes out of a bagged salad! In fact, my family and I just had some non-washed bagged salad the other night! I guess I figured it should come cleaned, I never thought it doesn't! Wow, 39% is a big number for bags containing bacteria! But like Laughing Gravy says, it hasn't killed me yet... but now I think I might start thinking about rinsing it off real quick in the future. Thanks for this information!

It's kinda like mushrooms, you can use them right out of the container with dirt and all, but it's better to rinse them off first.
Hopefully there's a crackdown now that the study has been done. :)

If I ever buy bagged lettuce, I don't wash it either. But most of the time I buy a head of lettuce, and rinse it off under cold water, then eat it.
