Seven medical experts evaluated a list of 14 popular forms of exercise in terms of their benefits for heart and lung endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, balance, weight control, muscle definition, digestion, and sleep. The following sports were judged, in order, to be most beneficial.

  1. Jogging - especially valuable for improving cardiovascular fitness
  2. Bicycling - especially valuable for improving cardiovascular fitness
  3. Swimming - especially valuable for improving cardiovascular fitness
  4. Skating
  5. Handball or squash - great for endurance and improving heart function and breathing
  6. Skiing - Nordic - uses leg and arm muscles, improves balance and agility
  7. Skiing - Alpine - uses leg and arm muscles, improves balance and agility
  8. Basketball
  9. Tennis - can build endurance even in unskilled players who run all over the court chasing balls. Doubles tennis is less valuable for endurance than singles.
  10. Calisthenics
  11. Walking
  12. Golfing
  13. Softball
  14. Bowling - good for vision coordination

I think the experts got it wrong a little bit; I think swimming should be #1 due to the lack of impact on the joints.

One more thing... bowling... seriously?!? I build up more of a sweat playing ping pong and it helps my hand-eye coordination better than bowling... my 300 lb uncle bowls while drinking a pitcher of beer and eating a whole pizza... bowling is not a sport, it's fun... but not a sport in my book!

Well, bowling wouldn't be that bad for you if you didn't eat the pizza and drink the beer while playing it!

I don't consider golf a sport. I think it takes skill, but a game where you drive a cart around to the next hole isn't considered a sport to me. I think it should just be called a game.

You can carry your own clubs and walk the course... you don't need to drive a cart!

Do any professionals walk the course and carry their bags?
