Seven medical experts evaluated a list of 14 popular forms of exercise in terms of their benefits for heart and lung endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, balance, weight control, muscle definition, digestion, and sleep. The following sports were judged, in order, to be most beneficial.
- Jogging - especially valuable for improving cardiovascular fitness
- Bicycling - especially valuable for improving cardiovascular fitness
- Swimming - especially valuable for improving cardiovascular fitness
- Skating
- Handball or squash - great for endurance and improving heart function and breathing
- Skiing - Nordic - uses leg and arm muscles, improves balance and agility
- Skiing - Alpine - uses leg and arm muscles, improves balance and agility
- Basketball
- Tennis - can build endurance even in unskilled players who run all over the court chasing balls. Doubles tennis is less valuable for endurance than singles.
- Calisthenics
- Walking
- Golfing
- Softball
- Bowling - good for vision coordination
