Now that I've joined the Y and done some experimenting with weights, I doubt I'll stop going once the season gets into full swing--my arms are so weak!!! Hurting my knee was a bit of a wake up and I decided to try to increase my cross-training to target muscles that don't get as much of a work out in derby because this will help prevent other injuries.
I work for Northwest Sinfonietta, a professional orchestra that plays in Tacoma and Seattle; however, I am not a musician myself. I do fundraising, events planning, donor relations, and grant writing.
I've read some of the posts on this forum and I can relate to a lot of what people are saying. I played soccer pretty competitively all growing up, but playing derby has gotten me into the best shape I've ever been in and I think it's partly because it is so fun that I forget I'm working out. When it IS hard and I have to push myself beyond what my mind thinks my body can do, my competitive drive kicks in and I have the support of 50 other women who are encouraging me to keep going. I find it hard to push myself without those team/community elements.
Thanks Ken, for introducing me to the weight machines. I'll track my workouts in the weights section. Everyone else, maybe I'll meet you sometime soon
