Post subject: A priest, a policeman and a Senator get a haircut

A priest walked into a barber shop in Washington, D.C. After he got his haircut, he asked how much it would be. The barber said, "No charge. I consider it a service to the Lord."

The next morning, the barber came to work and there were 12 prayer books and a thank you note from the priest in front of the door.

Later that day, a police officer came in and got his hair cut. He then asked how much it was. The barber said, "No charge. I consider it a service to the community."

The next morning, he came to work and there were a dozen donuts and a thank you note from the police officer.

Then, a Senator came in and got a haircut. When he was done he asked how much it was. The barber said, "No charge.

I consider it a service to the country."

The next morning, the barber came to work and there were 12 Senators in front of the door.

I'll come clean here and admit I'm stunned by the resistance to free health care in the US.

As someone who's grown up with it, it seems ludicrous for a country NOT to have it!

So how easy is it to go in and see a doctor? Is there a long wait?

That depends. I can walk into my doctor's surgery on any given morning and get seen in the open surgery. I have friends however (who go to different places) who make an appointment and have to wait several days. I guess I have a good surgery!

It's never let me down, though sometimes there can be long waiting lists for non-essential surgery. However, there's always the option to take out personal health insurance if you you have the money and the inclination- that can certainly get things like non essential surgery sorted very quickly. If I did that, I'd still have the same doctor though, and wouldn't have to claim on the insurance to have a consultation. My prescriptions would still be cheap (not that I have many anyway) and be paid for outside of that insurance too.

God knows how much my Mum's prescriptions would cost her if we didn't have the NHS- now she's retired, they're completely free.

If you have more money than you know what to do with, you can go completely private of course, if that's your thing...

It's not actually the health care anyone is opposed to, I don't believe more than maybe 25% of Americans even have a clue what the health care bill actually does. It's paying for it nobody wants any part of.

Joebert hit the nail on the head... I think people are afraid of the bill because you are now going to be required the have health insurance and pay for it or you will be fined.

Plus all of the little extras they like to add to a bill... like charging a tax for going to a tanning booth, not that I go to one, but who knows what all the little stuff is that they add into a bill this large.

My sister lives in Brazil, where they too have a government regulated health care... her friend went to visit her and he broke his wrist while he was there. It took him 5 hours in the emergency room to be treated and when he was treated they put screws in his wrist and botched the job. He had to get his wrist re-broken and fixed when he got back to the US. I am a little worried that the level of care that I currently see with my doctors will drop. Maybe my misgivings are wrong, but it is something that I will have to wait and see.

There are just so many "if"s in this equation and it seems so rushed by the administration and there are a lot of people who see the bill in legislation who are against it, that it has me a little nervous.

When I was a teenager I split the growth plate in my shoulder open one night and had to go to the emergency room. I had to sit in the waiting room for hours waiting for an X-Ray and they eventually sent me home in a sling. My father had insurance too. I made the mistake of trying to "be a man about it" and act like it didn't hurt so they kept letting everyone else go before me.

If I ever have to go to the emergency room again, I'm going to cry like a little girl and make as much noise as possible until they get me in.

I went to the emergency room once because I needed stitches and I sat down next to this lady who kept passing in and out of consciousness... she said she had fallen and hit her head in the bathroom and drove herself here at 10 am... it was around 2:30pm... apparently the lady just drove herself there and sat down... never signed in and was waiting... I told the person at the front desk... she said it wasn't their job to check on people sitting in the lobby... I went to a different hospital after I signed her in!
