I was reading on the internet that Dane did not even finish the marathon... that he did about 17 miles... which is awesome... but a car picked him up... I'm a little disappointed that they lied about it on the show... I don't know how accurate this is but even in the picture of them crossing the finish line it showed 5 hours and change not in 3 hours and 26 minutes like it said on the recap... Oh well... I wonder how he is doing now... they didn't even say what his current weight was... I hope he is doing okay!

Has anyone else read anything about this??? I only saw it from 3 sources and we all know how reliable the internet can be sometimes... but I did notice the discrepancy in times while watching the show...

Wow, I was under the impression that Dane did an entire marathon and he didn't!? They didn't have to lie to us like that! I was impressed that he did an entire marathon, but I guess it's not even true! I wonder if his wife actually finished the marathon or if she only did 17 miles too? I agree though, 17 miles is still a lot, but it's not a marathon like they said! Ha, that is just silly that they picked him up with a car so they could film him crossing the finish line!

I don't know about whether he finished the whole thing or not, but from experience (doing a half marathon, not a full), what the counter says as you cross the finish line is not always what you actually did. They start the marathon in waves, so maybe 200 people start at the beginning, then 200 people start 1 minute after that, and so on. For instance, when I did the half marathon, I was in something like the 22nd corral (what they called the groups), so I didn't start for a little bit. In the pictures when I crossed the finish line (after 13.1 miles), the counter said something like 4 hours and some odd minutes, but I actually did it in 3:44:59. We had this little chip that we attached to our tennis shoe laces, and it recorded when we crossed the start line, when we crossed some random line in the middle, and when we crossed the finish line. You just had to make sure you stepped on the rubber mats where the recorder chip was recording your time.

So if he DID do the whole thing, it is possible that he did it in the time he said, without the counter having shown the correct time when he crossed the finish line.

(Note to self: I'd really love to train again and do another half marathon...hmm...)

That makes sense about the time chip too. I've never done a marathon or half marathon, but I've done triathlons and we wear the time chip for that too and there are different groups that start before others. That's cool that you've done a half marathon! How long ago was that?

I did it in April of 2006, and afterwards, I decided to take a little break from exercising...fast forward almost 3 years, and I haven't really come out of my exercising hiatus. But I'd like to do it again. I walked most of it the first time, so if I did another, I'd like to try and run more than I did. I'm not concerned about running the whole thing, but I'd like to be in better shape and be able to run more than just 5-10 minutes. But who knows what the future holds?

I just found this article:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29490063/

Apparently, according to this, he rode in a van for three miles, so that they could get the shot of him crossing before the marathon closed at the 6 hour time limit. But he says he went back later and ran the 3 miles.

I say that's not good enough. If you can't make it the first time, you can't make it. There's no shame in trying something and not succeeding the first time. Keep trying.

Anyway, thought I'd share that one...

Thanks for finding this article! The article says he has been called the biggest liar! At least he regrets it. I mean it is still great for anybody to run as many miles has he did, but I just think he and NBC should never have made it be portrayed that he finished the entire marathon! After watching that episode of the show, I left it thinking, wow, good job Dane for completing an entire marathon... later to find out that it wasn't even true!

That's crazy... here is the video of Dane explaining himself in an interview on the Today Show. He says he intended on running the entire marathon, but the producers wanted the shot of him finishing at the end. Jillian is there with him on the interview and she says he ran 23 miles though and that she has never even done that! Dane has plans to run another marathon with his wife in April.

I think he should have been proud enough with his weight loss and that should have been good enough... why did he feel the need to (I'll be nice and say) modify the truth?!?
