Post subject: Broken or bruised tailbone

I think I have a broken tailbone or it could be just badly bruised. Has anybody experienced that before? I did it mountain biking a few weeks ago. I was going down a hill and rode over a tree stump going across the path which made my bike jump off of it. I was standing up on the pedals and that jump made my feet slip and then my butt slammed down into the seat of the bike. I felt something right away like I had squished my tailbone or something. It wasn't until that night that the pain really started whenever I sat down.

It seems as though if one of my injuries gets better, I pick up a new one right away. My back has been feeling great and now I had to go and do this. I'm not going to go to the doctor because whether it is broken or just bruised there is basically nothing a doctor can do to fix it... it just has to heal on its own. I have heard if it is broken it can take up to 6 months to heal! It's been 2 weeks already and the pain pretty much feels the same. It only hurts when I am sitting down though. I just got one of those donut seat things to sit on so that is helping for while I am on the computer.

It's been awhile since you posted your "Broken or bruised tailbone" topic, so I was wondering... how's your tailbone feeling now?

It's better now, I think I just ended up bruising it... if I would have broke it I think it would have taken a lot longer to heal. It still took about 2 months or so to heal, but if broken I think it would have taken more around 8 months to heal.

I finally got healed about about a week ago and felt no more pain. Then I went snowboarding this past Sunday and had to go and take a fall on my butt! I didn't do anything to my tailbone this time, thank goodness, but I now have a pretty good bruise there that will take a week or more to heal! :x

OMG!! Maybe landing on the snow helped soften the fall. You did land on the snow, right?

Nope, it was a pure ice patch... that's why I fell because of the ice... and it sure was a thick layer of ice! Not soft at all! :(

Tail bones are pretty strong. I think it's going to take a lot more than a slip on a bike to break one unless you have osteoporosis or something.

I've taken two extremely hard falls onto my tail bone and only ever bruised it. One spill was on roller blades where my feet came out from under me while grinding down a hand rail and I landed on the rail on my tail bone. The other time I was on a rope swing and had gained enough momentum for the rope to snap while I was pumping my legs for the up-swing and I landed on a root under the swing on my tail bone. That time just about everyone in the neighborhood heard me scream but I didn't break anything.

Yeah, I think tailbones are pretty strong, but it sure does hurt just bruising it! Actually it didn't hurt that bad when I actually did the bruisng... the worst was the pain I felt everytime I wanted to sit down from the internal bruise that was there.

I have cracked my tailbone... I won't get into a lot of details other than saying big kids shouldn't try to zip line from a 2 story high platform across a lake... and they should especially not let go before they get in water deeper than 6 inches. Needless to say... you know when you've cracked you butt bone... You experience numbing sensations down your leg and can't move for a while. The doctor gives you a little plastic donut to sit on and that is the only thing that eases the pain and you have to take it to school with you even though you are extremely embarrassed, because otherwise you could not sit down without crying! But yes... it does take a lot to crack a tailbone... the doctor was impressed!
