For older adults, falls are the leading cause of injuries, hospital admissions for trauma, and deaths due to injury. Fractures are the most serious health consequence of falls. Strategies to prevent falls for older adults include exercises to improve strength, balance, and flexibility. Removing hazardous objects that may cause tripping is also a good idea.

To prevent falls, the elderly should participate in daily exercise. Exercise is the natural prescription for healthy aging. Exercise is one of the most important ways to reduce your chances of falling. It makes you stronger and helps you feel better. Ask your doctor or health care worker about the best type of exercise program for you.

Causes of Adult Injuries:
  • Lack of exercise
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Hazardous item around the house

Eating a proper diet improves strength & endurance, and reduces disease risk. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

Stand beside a sturdy chair
Hold the chair with one hand
With the opposite leg tap your toe in front of your body / to the side of your body / behind your body
Try to do it without touching the chair but know it is there if you need it...
switch sides of the chair after 5 front / side / back rotations

If that is easy, try the same balance exercise only do not touch the ground with your toe... just do the tapping motion in the air.

This probably isn't going to be an option for everyone, and some may even say it's TMI, but I try to balance on one leg while I pee. I also do it when standing in lines, checking my mail, and various other nothing-else-to-do activities.

Is TMI too much info???? :o :!: :!:

I can't do the first one legged stand you mentioned, but the others are possibilities.

Standing on one leg "may look strange" out in the public, but I don't think anyone would pay attention these days...doesn't look any more strange then seeing people all over the place talking to themselves :!: :D

So you think, Y's Guy, if I am standing on one leg and talking to myself, maybe in front of the Walmart store, I would look weird :?: :?: lol
