There are side effects associated to the intake of fish oil or fish oil supplements.

Fish oil supplements are recommended in a dosage of 1 capsule twice in a day. However, if fish oil supplements are taken in large doses, it can be bleeding, in the form of nosebleeds, blood in the urine and strokes.

Many times the fishes are contaminated with chemicals like mercury and dioxins. So, eating such fish is like allowing pollutants in your body.

Some people complain of stomach upset due to intake of fish oil supplements.

One of the fish oil side effects is that diarrhea may occur if large doses of fish oil supplements are taken.

People suffer from gastrointestinal-related fish oil side effects like nausea, heartburn, fishy aftertaste, etc.

One needs to monitor the intake of omega-3 fish oil dosage, when treating blood pressure problems as overdose might lead to unwanted reduction of blood pressure.

Vitamin E is sometimes added to fish oil supplements and this vitamin can increase the levels of vitamin D and vitamin A toxicity.

However, there are more health benefits of fish oil and it is specially a great supplement for pregnant women. But, before taking any supplements of omega-3, consult a doctor and take the supplements in the recommended doses.

In the vast majority of cases where fish oil supplements are taken at the recommended dosage, there are no side effects. Be careful when you paint fish oil in a bad light, because the truth is the exact opposite. There are many, many studies showing the benefits of fish oil for its omega-3 fatty acids.

As far as contaminates are concerned, fresh fish, almost all fresh fish have certain levels. The FDA publishes average levels. Taking a high quantity fish oil supplement is a great way to minimize or eliminate exposure. The best processing techniques eliminate them down to a very granular level.

As for vitamin D. Don't take a supplement with vitamin D, unless you need it in addition to your regular diet. If you don't want the extra vitamin D, avoid cod liver oil and look for regular fish oil.

Remember everything in moderation, even good things like omega-3. Follow that rule, and get your fish oil. Your health will be better for it.

I've personally taken fish oil for a couple of years and there have been big improvements in my health.

My mum was prescribed fish oil by her doctor, due to her arthritis. She takes five or six big capsules a day as per her doctor's instructions.

Personally, I take a single capsule every day. With all the arthritis and joint problems in my family, it certainly can't hurt!

'fraid not. She's due for some injections in the joints soon - can't remember what they are offhand, but hopefully it'll help some.
