I just saw on the Oprah show today Dr. Oz talking about the only vitamin supplements that we need to take daily. They are:

  • Vitamin D - 1,000 units a day (only if you live in an area where are you not getting a daily dose of sunshine)
  • Calcium - 600 mg taken twice a day with Magnesium - 200 mg twice a day.
  • DHA Omega 3 - 600 mg a day
  • Baby Aspirin if you are over the age of 40 - 2 a day for total of 162 milligrams.
  • Multivitamin - cut it in half and take half in the morning and half in the evening. Premenopausal women need a multivitamin with iron and 5,000 units of vitamin A. Men and postmenopausal women need just 2,500 units of vitamin A.

Apparently these are all of the vitamins we need daily!

This is good to know. I have a cupboard full of all kinds of vitamins and supplements and I have no idea if what I am taking is really needed or not. I also think half of the stuff that I have bought individually is included in the multivitamin that I take, so I am probably getting more of certain elements than I really need. I am really thinking of cutting down my daily vitamin intake to this bare minimum. I'd save money too!
